12-25 MERRY CHRISTMAS!

12-20 A new Indiana Beer! Warbird Brewing Company has introduced its second beer, P-47 Warbird Wheat, to draught accounts in Indiana.  A German-sytle Hefeweizen, the beer is brewed exclusively with premium German family maltster Weyermann wheat and Pilsner malts, Hallertau hops and German yeast.  This is German beer that just happens to be brewed in America.  The beer is served unfiltered with yeast, a soft easy-drinking soft beer with paradoxical great complexity.  Soft aromas of bready banana and clove lead to a medium-bodied true weizen with light citrus, a hint of vanilla, and a fleeting fresh peach finish.  The Bavarian blue and white lozenge flag marks the tall skinny tap handle, modeled after the control stick in the back of our T-6 Texan.  When owner Dave Holmes was deployed from Germany during the first Gulf War, his unit’s “The Boys from Syracuse” F-16 fighters proudly bore the blue and white tail flash- making it a natural choice to identify the beer.  Distributed in the Indy area by Rhoades Beverage, ask for it at your local spot.  If you want to see it in a can, be sure to contact the brewery!

12-14 Hello everyone. I'm sending out this invitation, to all who might be interested in joing a few of the local BA's (Beer Advocates) at a gathering this Saturday, at 5pm. To those who may not know what I'm talking about, the Indy BA's try and get together every couple of months just to drink beer and socialize. We've had beer auctions, with the money going to BA. Last year we had a gift exchange, with a twist. Which really turned out good. So if anyone is interested in coming on out and joining the festivities, we will be meeting up at the Downtown BW3's.  You are invited, but not required, to bring a beer gift for the beer exchange. Now on this you can bring anything you happen to have. It doesn't have to be a special beer, but then again it can't be crap either! We will do as we did last year. The wrapped beer will be set on a table. Each person who contributes will be pick a number out of a hat. The person with #1 will go first, and so forth until all the beer is selected. Oh yea I forgot the most important part. Stealing will be allowed...If you see a beer that someone else has that you want...well you can take it. But don't get attached to what you pick, because you might not have it long. Sound like fun? Of course it does! Would I put on a boring party? ....don't answer that. -Mark Mahon (mark@indianabeer.com)

12-8 INDY: In the spirit of small, independent, neighborhood grocery stores with great beer, Cork's Marketplace returns. Located at 49th and Pennsylvania, and happily under new ownership, Cork's has returned to past and has brought back the great beer and wine selection of old. The beer choices run the gamut, from dometics on up, with an emphasis on the up. Selections from Bells, Upland, Ommegang, Rogue, Oaken Barrel, Three Floyds, and Avery start the craft side. From outside the States, Unibroue, Spaten, Samuel Smith, Lindemans, and Kronenburg lead the way.

12-7 INDY: Deano's Vino is back in business! Deano moved his store from it's location in Fountain Square over to Massachusettes Avenue, on the North end near R Bistro. Many of the much loved antics will occur there, as Deano brings is personal style to the Ave. The food is great, there's wine aplenty, and the beer options are awesome, and well priced. Two Hearted, Kronenburg, and Turbo Dog on draft right now, but those are subject to change. The bottled beer selection starts with Deano's affinity for the "Lawnmower" retro beers, but runs all the way to Unibroue's Trois Pistoles and Delirium Tremens.

12-6 THC's Winter Warmer will be Feb 11. $25. music, food, Indiana beers, Tripel, Dubbel, Porter, free taxi... For more info click here

11-17 We're baaaaack! Finally some great news for Indiana Beer...

Three Floyds opens brewpub in Munster!!! It's been years in the making, but the 75-seat pub at Three Floyds Brewing Co. is open and ready for business. Rather than taking out a loan for the expansion, the Floyds -- Nick, Simon and their father, Michael -- chose an unusual method to raise the necessary cash for the brew pub. They sold stock in their company. Click here to learn more!

11-9 Barley Island BrewMaster Jon Lang has "Snickerdoodle Java Stout" on tap at Barley Island Brewing Company.  Snickerdoodle is a popular coffee flavor, roasted at Noble Coffee & Tea in downtown Noblesville.  The gourmet coffee beans are cold-brewed, then infused into a keg of Brass Knuckles Oatmeal Stout.  If you miss the Snickerdoodle keg, the next Java Brew will be the return of last year's Black Magic Java Stout. Cask conditioned Bourbon Barrel-Aged Oatmeal Stout is currently on the beer engine.

11-4 The Broad Ripple Brewpub is celebrating its fifteenth year on the 14th November - the day we opened our doors back in 1990. To celebrate all pints will be $2 on both the 14th and the 15th. On the 14th we'll be tapping our 15th anniversary beer, created especially for the event by our brewer Kevin Mattalucci. Also, t-shirts commemorating the occassion and designed by local artist Todd Kennedy, will be available. We great night is guaranteed for all.

11-3 Elves unwanted in Connecticut! Damn anti-publicans!

11-2 Matt Bryant from Lafayette reports "Went to Chumley's yesterday for the first time in months to find a new, very detail beer menu with some great additions. Also had a description of each style available...was very impressed. Along with that was a list of Rotating Taps, including:

Bell's Cherry Ale Aug-Sep (Still on tap Oct 31)
Paulaner Oktoberfest Sep-Oct (didn't see that one)
Warsteiner Oktoberfest Sep-Oct ("")
Breckenridge Avalanche Ale Oct-Nov (didn't appear to have been tapped yet)

Also was very impressed and excited about this...tried the Strong Ale which was delicious....

For a limited time, Rogue Brewery of Oregon, one of the most celebrated
breweries in the world, is brewing up some special beers in honor of their 15th
anniversary. Chumley's is proud to be one of only 30 retail outlets in the U.S.
to offer these beers.
Rouge will send us 2 kegs per month of their latest creation. These
"upscale" brews will run the gamus of styles - including amber ale, strong ale,
oyster stout, schwarzbier, and pilsner - to name a few.
To help entice you and your friends to try these premium beers, we created
the "Blow the Rogue" special. If the keg runs out while we are pouring your
pitcher, you get that pitcher free plus a new pitcher, a $10 gift card, and $5
for your server.

Up the street at LBC, Piper's Pride will be on cask in the near future.

10-24 From Rich-O's: If you're just tuning in, we recently acquired a device known as a cask breather, which enables us to serve cask-conditioned ales more often and to keep them fresh for as long as it takes to deplete them, rather than facing time constraints when tapped and served the traditional way. For the 2005 Lupulin Land Harvest Hop fest, our friendly local brewers undertook to cask-condition firkins of their ales, and these will be appearing on the hand pull on a more or less daily basis for as long as they last. TAPPED TODAY: Cumberland Brews Matt's Red (two-row barley and aromatic malt; three Nugget hop additions in the kettle, and dry-hopped with Nugget).

10-7 This week Barley Island Brewing Company began shipping their seasonal Brass Knuckles Oatmeal Stout in 12 oz bottles.  Brass Knuckles is a full-bodied, smooth dark ale with a mealy texture from the use of oats.  With a thick creamy head and malty richness from the dark roasted grains, this ale weighs in at about 5.0% abv.

9-30 Bloomington Brewing Company is releasing it's Java Porter on October 1! "Brewer Floyd Rosenbaum is gearing up for the cool fall months with Bloomington favorite Java Porter. Java Porter has a complex coffee aroma and flavor with good body and excellent balance. Complete with a dry finish and aftertaste, Java Porter is complemented by local coffee roaster Partridge & Quigley's Sumatra Blue Ling Tong."

9-29 From a beer spotter in NE Indiana.... "As I was the one who initiated getting Pier 32 in Hamilton, IN included on your site ( I have no affiliation with them what-so-ever), I thought I would update you on their vastly improved beer selection. Still only 4 taps, but on my recent visit (9-10-05) one of them was Pax Whitte from Belgium. The bottle selection has greatly expanded to include many new beers such as, Rochefort 10, Chimay Blue, St Bernardus 12, Three Floyds Brian Brou Red and Gumball Head, Dogfish Head Midas Touch Golden, as well as selections from Arcadia, Bells, Dark Horse, Founders, New Holland, and many many others. As far as I know Pier 32 is now the only place in NE Indiana to have Rochefort, including liquor stores. Pier 32 is now by a wide margine the best beer bar in NE Indiana. Add to this above average food, and a beautiful location on Hamilton Lake, and you have a really fine establishment indeed."

9-27 Bell's will be celebrating Wheat beers with a series of unique recipes and takes on 5 wheat ales. The series will begin distribution in October with "Wheat 2" and will continue every couple of weeks through "Wheat 4," "Wheat 6," "Wheat 8." This series of beers will be unique beers all based on the same yeast. Yeast from "Wheat 2" will be harvested to fuel "Wheat 4" and so on through "Wheat 8."Bell's "wheat fest" will culminate in a special recipe called "Wheat Love."Stay tuned for more details about these exciting beers.

9-23 "On Thursday October 13, 2005, there will be a multitude of Cavalier Distributing suppliers with a multitude of beer to sample at a trade show Cincinnati Ohio. 9-10 Bob checks out some Belgian Beer.... IN BELGIUM!

9-9 In Indy the 21st Amendment chain has recently added two more Dogfish Head labels, giving them four in 8 or 9 stores. They have 60 and 90 minute, as well as RaisonD'Etre and Indian Head Brown. They also have three Upland labels priced7.49 and 7.99. Three Floyds, Abita, Oaken Barrel, Spaten, and Franziskaner are also staples. Sam Smith, Youngs, Lindemans, Chimay, Delirium, and Unibroue are also available.

The stores at 56th and Illinois, 86th and Ditch, and 151st and 31 have really made strides. Past what I already mentioned, they also have Rogue, Flying Dog, Red Seal, Anderson Valley, Singha, Anchor, Ayinger, St Peters, Corsendonk, Allagash, New Holland, Westmalle, Piraat, and Melbourne Brothers, among others.

9-6 Shoreline Brewing opened their doors on Monday August 29th! Their beer lineup includes Beltane Scottish Ale, Benny’s American Pale, Foggy Loggy Lager, Don’t Panic English Pale Ale, Singing Sands Oatmeal Stout, and Queen Mum IPA.

Sam  Strupeck , the brewmaster, said their "official grand opening celebration" will be early October and feature a well aged Barley Wine. Also in the works is a mug club, Shoreline growlers, and a Region Rat Red Ale.

For those beer lovers who are also train buffs, check out their official logo which looks just like the South Shore logo.

The brewery, which is open daily and serves a eclectic selection of food, is located at  208 N. Wabash St.,  Michigan City, Indiana Phone: 219- 879-4677.

9-5 The Brewers of Indiana Guild website has a new look, but it's a shell of what it once was, and there is no contact information other than an address pointing to the Broad Ripple Brew Pub. It's difficult to piece together what's going on within the Guild itself, but apparently another website domain, www.indianabrewersguild.org has been registered (that's different than the link above) and there is apparently some confusion as to who, or what, exactly, the Guild "is." Will there be two Guilds? Apparently the coordinator of this year's BIG festival held in Optimist Park did not get paid for his/her services. Perhaps that has something to do with it? Stay tuned as the soap opera unfolds and we report the real story. Meanwhile email webmaster@indianabeer.com if you have information on this developing story.

9-4 Back Roads Brewery is having an open house: "Our 9th annual open house is slated for Saturday September 24, 2005 from 1 to 5.  Entry fee $10.00   Must be at least 21 to enter. Please mark your calendars. Special Guests  Shoreline Brewery (Michigan City) and Three Floyds (Munster). Entertainment by Ein Prosit (20 piece Umpa Band) Food by Colima Mexican Restaurant Our Fall beer this year will be a Robust Porter and will be released during our September 24th Fall Event."

9-3 "We were planning a Beer Dinner downtown at the Marriott on September 24th, but just yesterday we decided that we'd have to cancel it. We don't have the brewers in place for it and the timing seems difficult. We had also been planning for the Chimay Head Brewer to visit Indy this month, but that has also been cancelled as Paterno Wines (the Midwest US Chimay importer) will not be bringing Chimay draught in as expected. Chimay draught (Cinq Cents) is expected to be in Indiana in early 2006. In other news, we hear that Abita Brewing will be without electricity for some time so I don't expect much beer the rest of the year from them, if any. I'm sure other Louisiana brewers are affected, like Dixie, etc.

Other items of potential interest - Three Floyds thinks the next batch of Dreadnaught will be out around the first week of January, 2006. Kahn's Fine Wines on Keystone is planning a lengthy series of free beer tastings every Monday evening prior to the start of the Monday Night Football game. Each tasting will feature a brewer or brewery rep. They will start with Ken Price for the Thursday, Sept. 8 opener, then Veronica from Bell's, Jeff from Barley Island and I'll attach the schedule for the rest, as I can't recall them all. The plan is to have every Monday night football broadcast have a corresponding tasting." -Bob Mack of WCB

9-2 Check out a very big ad, perhaps the biggest beer advertisement in history! Very cool... Thanks Mark

9-1 "THe Liquor Stop in Highland, Indiana has been sold. I just spoke to the previous owner. Robin (you list him as the beer guy on your website) left about 2 weeks ago.

Hopefully, the new owners will continue the tradition of providing the outstanding beer selection that the previous owners did."

-Laura

8-4 In Louisville: L&N Wine Bar & Bistro Local Microbrew dinner, Monday Aug. 8, 7 p.m.

8-4 From Anita Johnson: Thank you to all the entrants in the 2005 World Class Beer Geek Challenge. The entries were judged before the Indiana Microbrewery Festival on Saturday, July 30th. The beers were judged by Jim Schembre, CEO of World Class Beverages and Caleb Staton, brewer at Upland Brewing. Jim has spent at least the last 10 years of his career marketing high end imports and micros throughout Indiana. Caleb is a fermentation science graduate of UC Davis and has brewed at Upland for several years.

The first round of the judging was done on a 50 point scale using the BJCP score sheets and format. Three beers stood out among the eleven entries. Those three beers, brewed by Ron Smith, Michael Pearson and Joel Roellgen, were re-evaluated in round two. The judging in the second round looked at recipe but also commercial viability. When the wrangling was over, Ron Smith became the newest Beer Geek. Ron's beer will be brewed and bottled with state-wide distribution by World Class Beverages. Look for Ron's beer on shelves sometime this fall.

7-22 Greg Koch, founder and president of Stone Brewing in San Marcos California, has a very cool thing going on over at Stone's website: a vBLOG. That's right, a video blog, a collection of short videos (2-5 minutes) documenting the goings on at Stone Brewing Company. They are really entertaining and you learn a lot about beer in the process. My recent favorite is probably where Greg responds to an attack on his flagship brand 'Arrogant Bastard'. He really lets 'em have it. See it at the top of the page here. There's also a good one about Stone's success in trudging through miles of thick, sloppy bureaucracy simply to call there Russian Imperial Stout a Russian Imperial Stout. That one is second from the top in this page. You'll need quicktime to view the movies.

7-21 A new microbrewery is opening in South Bend with the name "Nine G Brewing Company."  They are exclusively a microbrewery, we will not have a restaurant.  They will, however, have a tap room that will be open for tours and tastings in the future.  Beer will hopefully be ready late in the year.

7-20 Deano's Vino Restaurant and Wine Bar (beer, too!) opened on July 19. Click Here for photos

7-20 In response to Mark Mahon's find in Plainfield, Matt Bryant reports "The Payless (basically same store as Kroger) in West Lafayette had pretty much the exact same selection. The catch is it's not with the rest of the beer...but across the way near the health food and Pharmacy. You have to be looking for it. They pretty much have the exact same beers as posted in the news section. Last I was there, they had Chimay, Sam Smith's, and I believe 3-4 of Lindeman's Lambic's on sale. Also believe they had a couple Upland and Three Floyd's on sale. Those have all been on sale for months. Probably no one knows they're there! Recently got Sierra Nevada's Porter and Rogue's Mocha Porter for about $7-8 a six pack...a steal for me."

7-19 Indianabeer.com was mentioned on the Australian Craft Brewers Podcast! Ok, it's a stretch to say that's our 15 minutes of "fame," but it's kind of cool none the less. Catch the July episode by downloading iTunes from apple.com After launching the program click on podcasts then search for beer. The show will also be posted within a few days on their website.

7-8 News from Rich-O's in New Albany: "The first batch of brewer Jesse Williams’s Croupier IPA, his first solo formulation, flew out of here so quickly that I only had a couple of pints of it myself. Now the NABC brew crew has indicated that a firkin of Croupier IPA is ready to be served, so it will be tapped tomorrow (Friday, July 8) for serving at 1:00 p.m. It will be returning on draft during the week of July 11 (not this week, as previously announced). Nugget hops are used for bittering, then Fuggles and Cascades, with Cascades used for dry-hopping. A French 2-row malt is used, providing a slightly different malt flavor than when using our standard Simpson’s Golden Promise.

Meanwhile, ConeSmoker is back on tap. Jesse has studied the recipes for both previous NABC smoked ales, and settled on a tweaked version of the original ConeSmoker: 80% German smoked malt, with the remaining 20% French 2-row; a German/English hop bill (Hallertauer, East Kent Goldings, and dry-hopped with Spalt in the secondary). The result is smokier than Spezial, but lighter bodied than Schlenkerla, with hops definitely in evidence along with the smoke.

If you’re a Bush Hog fan, be aware that we’re down to the last gallons on tap. It will return later in the summer."

7-1 From the Anderson Herald newspaper "By the end of September a new restaurant, including a brew pub, live music and outdoor dining could be opened at the Town Center Plaza. The Ghebremichael family of Indianapolis submitted the only proposal to purchase the Town Center Plaza with its two office buildings and two condominiums on Tuesday. The Redevelopment Commission will meet next Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. to give final approval to the sale. With a stage already in place at the Town Center, Ghebremichael said live entertainment will be offered along with outside dining. The family already owns the necessary equipment and plans to open by late September, he said. The unnamed restaurant will offer international foods."

A visit to the new Rock Bottom in Indianapolis on 86th St. was unspectacular but not disappointing. For this Rock Bottom it was a soft start-up in May, meaning no grand opening and no advertising. Nevertheless they were packed today at 3pm. The same beers as downtown with the same great atmosphere, although a little smaller, whether actual or imagined. We all know the Rock beers are brewed on the premisis according to corporate recipe, but to their credit Rock allows each individual brewer to tweak the recipe to their liking. Nothing over 5.4% ABV was on tap (is this a corporate stay-safe decision?). Oh well, the brewer is only temporary. Soon there will be a new brewer installed and he will have cask conditioned ale on the hand-pull.

6-17 Bob has checked in from Switzerland where he's been hunting brewpubs

Ted Miller at The Brugge Brasserie has brewed what might be the most enjoyable Blonde I've ever, well, enjoyed- a hazy, medium-bodied, effervescent brew with a creamy head whispering banana all the way down. On tap now!

Head to Head: The Individuality of Taste [06/08/05] We 're not Portland with dozens of breweries, yet Central Indiana enjoys a vibrant scene with two handfuls of brewpubs offering over a hundred variations in the three great traditions of beer: German, English and Belgian.

Down to drinking [06/08/05] Brewpubs that NUVO visited serve a sampler tray with standards and seasonals on tap. What follows is an overview of who is crafting and what most pleased the palate of a "troller of brewpubs. "

Fizz Philanthropy [06/08/05] "Good people drink good beer," pontificated the late Hunter S. Thompson, renowned co-creator of gonzo journalism.
