May Beer News: Most recent at top

5-31 The Bloomington Hop Jockeys have reported an update. "We meet every 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month.  Every other month we host a brew day and have a handful of other events each year such as microbrewery trips, equipment build days, and homebrew parties.  Though our club is very focused on homebrewing and having fun, it has been very successful at helping members, regardless of their initial level of expertise, become better brewers through the sharing of knowledge and experience.   The events and meetings are open to all who are interested, feel free to sign up for our mailing list which can be found on the website."

5-30 The 10 Spot, a new bar in northern Indiana serving up great food, beer, and entertainment

5-28 A stop at Brugge Brasserie revealed some new brews on tap- A tripel (guest beer) not as good as Tripel de Ripple.. clearer and not as full-bodied. Also new on tap a framboise- although a guest brew the framboise will knock you socks off, the raspberry lends a deep red hue and the flavor is sweet and rich, very carbonated so the flavor dances in your mouth- even mom would like. Finally is a pils which Ted is drinking. "It's a balanced as any beer I've ever tasted." Still cloudy from yeast it will soon be clear and quaffable.

I know this may look like shameless promotion of our sponsor. To be honest I was looking to buy a variety of beer the other day for a Memorial Day party and the only thing available in the store was World Class Beverages Spring Taster. Tasty it was. It's still available at Kahn's ($16.99). Here's a look inside:

In addition to the beer you get a Brewspaper which makes for good reading as you drink a bottle of:

Dark Horse Sapient- a Belgian style tripel with sweet, tart, orange flavor. Sapient means to be wise and taste.

Bell's Oberon- Larry Bell's best selling beer- brewed with Sazz hops to produce a spicy and fruity brew the color of a warm summer evening

Arcadia Whitson- Golden colored, rich and full-bodied, this ale has notes of orange blossom due to the addition of honey

Buffalo Bill's Orange Blossom Cream Ale- A refreshing spring beer with a noticeable taste of orange

New Holland Red Tulip- A smooth and malty red ale.

On tap at Rich O's in New Albany:

Beak’s Best … English ESB named for world-famous traveler, scholar and drinks aficionado “Beak” Barry.  Standard strength.

Blonde Abbey … Belgian-style abbey ale in the Corsendonk Pale mold, although a tad milder at 7% abv.

Community Dark … A dark-colored, light-bodied English Mild, and the ideal place to begin overcoming unfounded fears of the dark.  4.5% abv.

Stumble Bus … Michael’s final testament is the second coming of this powerhouse barley wine -- 100 IBUs, and 10% abv.

5-27 The Rock Bottom-College Park will open with regular hours starting Monday, Memorial Day. M-Th 11a-1a, F, St 12-2a and Sunday 12-12. Downtown Rock brewer, Dustin Boyer, has brewed and provided the existing beers. However, English brewer, Iain Wilson will become the College Park Rock Bottom's Brewmaster. He will arrive in  2-3 weeks but will then spend an orientation month in Colorado before returning to Indy to head up the brewing. All the usual Rock's beers are on tap with the exception of the 'Brewmaster's choice' which will have to wait until  the brewmaster arrives! They are set up for two cask conditioned ale specials soon to be offered - with the first to be a vanilla stout? Lots of Stainless with some copper accents. Taps are stainless. Beautiful outside (and inside) presentation of the tanks from two sides of the restaurant. This is a very attractive Rock Bottom. This location may become a problem for me as I work just down and across the street and will probably find it will be hard to pass up on may way home! Thanks to Mark Sheiss for this great news.

5-24 Three organic beers available at Wild Oats: Pinkus Hefe-Weizen... Very light in body and color- Crisp, dry, spritzy, and refreshing, filtered beer, with little of the Bavarian wheat fruit character. Samuel Smiths Organic Lager... A full-bodied lager with lots of malt and hop character. A touch hoppier than many lagers yet perfectly balanced. Pinkus Munster Alt... Pale, golden color with excellent, herbaceous aroma, delicate fruit-acid palate, and long dry finish. "World classic."—Michael Jackson

5-22 Save the date of Saturday, July 30th from 2-6 pm for the 10th Annual Indiana Microbrewers Festival in Broadripple's OptiPark on 66th Street just east of College Avenue. This is the "Granddaddy" beer sampling event for Indiana---the only place where all the drafts are poured by the owners/brewers who are there to share their experience with everyone else. And what better experience is there than that of great craftbeer? Many venues offer the format of sampling beers to raise money for a great cause, but no other tasting festival in Indiana gives you access to this many beers AND the brewers and owners dedicated to making them for the rest of us. (And don't we love them for it?) In addition to more than 100 beers from Indiana and regional brewers, the Indiana Microbrewers Festival features live music, great food, and the return of the yeast-pitch dunk tank and empty keg toss competitions, with prizes for the winners! Festival proceeds this year will be donated to support the Indiana chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Northside Indy Optimists' Club. Purchase advance tickets for $25 at Indiana brewpubs and area Marsh stores.

5-21 In addition to the usual 6, The Rathskeller has the following seasonals on tap: Weihenstephaner dark, Rathskeller Razz, Woodchuck Cider, Smithwicks, Guiness, Warsteiner Oktoberfest

5-19 Great News!!!!!! The cheapest pint of Arrogant Bastard in the world is available throughout the summer at Encore Cafe in Bloomington IN. For a measly $2 (that's TWO) you can get yourself a whole pint of one of the world's finest hop oil elixirs. A remarkably pungent beer with in your face resinous, piney hop oils and rich, warm, malt undertones, this 6.8% abv brew will knock your socks off. They just received two fresh kegs today and told me that it's selling really well. I responded: 'No shite.' So if you're in Bloomington this summer, you have every reason to stop by this wonderful Cafe. And if you see a big hairy guy sitting at the sidewalk tables on a Sunday evening hoisting pints of Arrogant Bastard, it's probably me. -Matt Dunn

Encore Cafe, part of the Bloomingfoods quartet, is located at 6th and Morton, just one block west of the square, downtown Bloomington, IN.

5-16 From Matt Dunn: Dogfish Head continues to make in roads. Now you can find 60 minute IPA on draft at the Bluebird in Bloomington. The perfect accompaniment to the great music they bring to town.

5-15 The Brugge Brasserie although unfortunately dry of Tripel has a weighty "dark belgium ale" on tap that will hit you upside the head after two at 7.5% ABV. The moules frites provencal are delectable. Paid a visit to Rock Bottom, their Rocket Juice amber ale was less than igniting. What's up with Rock Bottom these days?

5-14 Some news from Matt of Cavalier...

  • The Stone Vertical Epic Ale 05-05-05 made it to Indiana in time for the Thursday 05-05-05 release! Not as much made it Indiana as in years past! He also noted there is still some of the 04-04-04 still on the shelves.
  • CV Amber is now hitting the shelves out side of Terre Haute and Chumleys in Broadripple will also be carrying CV Amber Bottles.
  • Limited amounts of Founders Breakfest Stout the summer seasonal, Rubaeus arrived this week and is hitting the shelves. There will be more Rubaeus to follow soon!
  • Shipyard Summer Ale and Mendocino Summer Ale also arrived this week and getting out and about. The Two Brothers Dog Days of Summer is due in next week.

5-13 Ken Price's new Maibock is now on draft. This tasty German lager is clean and malty with an appropriately hoppy finish. Medium amber in color with a rocky, off-white head, this traditional springtime brew will taste great in the Beer Garden. But please treat the Maibock with respect. At 6.9% alcohol by volume, this beer is significantly stronger than lighter domestic beers.

5-13 Fishers Liquors at 116th and Olio opens today!

5-12 WBYR FM The Bear in Fort Wayne is currently running a campaign to legalize the sale of beer in Indiana on Sundays called "It's My Can Mitch!!"  They already have over 2,000 "signatures." If you want to help get rid of this antiquated law go to their website (click here) and sign the petition.

5-11 The word on the street is that Chalkies reopened May 3 without the Belgium beers and a lot of the liquor, wine, and food that made it great. Apparently it is now a "run of the mill" pool hall. Our only hope is for Marvin to open another great beer bar, soon.
