June Beer News: Most recent at top

6-1 Young's has announced they will close the Ram Brewery in Wandsworth, London, and move all their brewing to Charles Wells' Eagle Brewery in Bedford. No date for the move was given. Here's some quotes from their press release that will infuriate CAMRA:

  • "Young’s is moving some of its specialist brewing equipment and members of its brewing staff to Bedford" (Layoffs).
  • "The Young’s board will then be in a position to develop and increase its present estate of 205 pubs." (Young's will become a pub management group).
  • "As we prepare to say goodbye to Britain’s oldest brewery, founded in the reign of Elizabeth I and run by my family since 1831, we must avoid shedding tears and instead consider the advantages that our move will have."
  • "...we shall benefit from access to Charles Wells’ brands, including three speciality lagers, the Red Stripe Jamaica Lager Beer and Kirin Ichiban, Japan’s number one beer, which are brewed under licence at Bedford, and Corona Extra..." (Lagers at Young's pubs)

Speaking of Lambics (a couple of days ago), I'm reminded that the Chapeau line isn't the only lambic to make use of sweetness. Belle-Vue, Lindeman's, St. Louis are also very sweet.

In the beer menu at 't Brugs Beertje (Brugge) there's an article entitled "The Definition of Lambic".

On 31 March 1993 a Koninklijk Besluit (Royal Decree) on beer was passed by the Belgian parliament that changed the definition of what constitutes a lambic beer. . . "acid beers where spontaneous fermentation is part of the production process."

"Acid beer" is not a phrase that means an awful lot to a lambic brewer as even the sharpest gueuze should really be looking to be dry and tart rather than acidic. However, this is also helpfully defined thus . . . "beer with a total acidity of at least 30 milli-equivalents of NaOH per litre and a grade of volatile acids of at least 2 milli-equivalents of NaOH per litre. In acid beers of spontaneous fermentation at least 30% of the total weight of the incorporated starch- or sugar-containing ingredients must consist of wheat".

This means that, for example, a beer made from 10% real spontaneously fermented lambic and 90% ultra-dry wheat beer is permitted to be sold as "gueuze-lambic".

You may think that such a dippy definition of this most traditional of craft products came about because politicians have little expertise when it comes to beer. But this is not necessarily true. For example, Jean-Luc Dehaene, who was Prime Minister of Belgium back in 1993, knows enough about it to be appointed to the Board of Interbrew. Interbrew happens to make Belle-Vue "gueuze-lambic", which some cynics claim falls somewhat short of being an oude gueuze.

5-29 BarrelHouse brewery in Cincinnati has installed a bottling line and you know what that means - RedLegg Ale, Boss Cox Double Dark IPA, Cumberland Pale Ale, Duveneck's Dortmunder Style Lager, and Hocking Hills Hefeweizen may be here in 22oz bottles soon. They are currently being distributed in Ohio by Cavalier. article

Are they referring to Kevin Cox as the Fourth Floyd on this week's Good Beer Show?

BeerJuggs.com - Check it out. It's a 2-disk instructional DVD to introduce homebrewing (even kitchen brewing). $25 incl shipping. Beginning brewing, Fermentation, Bottling, Yeast propagation,  Intermediate brewing, Keg Conditioning, Advanced Brewing, Building a Kegerator, Outtakes. "Hairy brewers, hot women, and all the beer we could drink." Also tips and equipment ideas. Even Tattoo Bob gets one in.

It's funnier than a college economics professor. It's also sexier. There are clips on the web site to back up both those assertions. Shaking your carboy to introduce oxygen works better if a busty blonde does it, and even better if she spanks it. Have you ever seen a strawberry condom on the neck of a carboy?

Best of all, you can chuckle along with Clay Robinson and Tim Marshall (aka Juice and Colonel Mr. Safety Pants). This was shot last year while that duo ruled the Rock Bottom in downtown Indy. Frankly, the best acting comes from Helene Bushnell as Big H, the hose master and the drill sergeant. Watch it in the privacy of your own kitchen.

" I use BeerJuggs Every day and it feels so good." - Dave Chichura - Mayor of Colorado.

5-26 A big update this week from northern Indiana. Sit back, carefully take the cap off a beer, pour, and enjoy as we circle clockwise.

Lafayette Brewing will be pouring (and serving food) at the Taste of Tippecanoe on June 17th. Later this summer, date TBD, they plan a Dinner With Boris - 4 courses, each with a different vintage of Big Boris Barleywine. Right now their beer lineup includes:

  • On Tap: Prophet's Rock Pale Ale, Eastside Bitter, Piper's Pride, Eighty Five, Black Angus Oatmeal Stout, Eighty Five, Tippecanoe Common
  • On the handpull: Weeping Hog IPA
  • Current Seasonals
    • Emancipator Dopplebock
    • Summer Kölsch Bier - aged on apple chips toasted and soaked in chardonnay

Also in Lafayette, the Village Bottle Shop has a rack of "Beers of the Month" with where some exotics and some less exotics are displayed at sale prices. They've also picked up the Signatory line of Single malt Scotch.

Anthony's Cafe in Highland has just revamped their beer selection and now offers about 100 different bottles. Since our last visit they have added 4 taps (2 from Three Floyds, Upland Wheat, and Bitburger right now). They are also planning a summer beer festival.

The Shoreline Brewery and Restaurant in Michigan City has been open since last December. Plain Jane on the outside. Knotty pine and brick on the inside give it a big Lake Michigan look. Sam Strupeck's attitude toward his food, music, and beer all seem to be "take no prisoners". Has to still be a heavy metal fan. Just look at the appetizers - hummus, pretzels, sushi, buffalo calamari. (oops, not bison-squid, that's Buffalo calamari complete with celery and blue cheese).

The beers on tap right now:

  • Foggy Loggy Lager - As light as it gets. Gotta have one for the 'Mercuns.
  • Don't Panic - English pale ale. Very pale color but a solid ESB.
  • Queen Mum IPA - The Aberdeen recipe as a start with serious bitterness.
  • Sum Nug IPA - Why do a Cascade IPA when you can achieve the same bitterness with Summit and Nugget hops. It's big.
  • Region Rat Red - Dark copper. Smooth. Growler-worthy - a beer you won't tire of.
  • Smokestack - Smoked Porter. "Just this side of overkill" smoke adds to a solid porter base. A+
  • Drunken Toad - Small and hoppy. A small beer made from the second running of an upcoming Barleywine. The surprise is the identical hop rate as the Barleywine. The malt is really, really subdued.
  • Curse the Goat - A classic Dopplebock. One of the hazards of this job is trying to be objective about the 8th beer.

A new batch of Beltaine Scottish (a Silver Medal at this year's World Beer Cup) is conditioning. Did have a taste but Jim Herter, writer for Great Lakes Brewing News came in about 6 beers back and I can't read my writing.

Back Road has Chuck's summer schedule in full gear. Includes a Belgian Wit available now in bottles. 5%. Big aroma. Quick, dry finish. Also, the Blueberry Ale is back - it has lots of blue character added to the Black Road Ale.

IndianaBeer finally caught the doors open at the NINE G brewery in South Bend. Two F-16 National Guard pilots, their wives, and Bryan Wiggs from Arcadia have been brewing since just December and their first three offerings are just now moving outward from the Michiana area. The first batch of their Infidel Imperial IPA will catch notice and, 8,000 sq ft of an older brick industrial building gives them plenty of room to expand past their now-4-beer portfolio.

  • Bitchin' Betty Citrus Wheat Beer - Bright apricot color. A bit of coriander. Middle of road summer backyard beer.
  • Wingman Amber Ale - Amber with carbonation that ads to the base. Again, middle of style.
  • Blacksnake Porter - Solid with plenty of crystal malt roasty goodness. Not a breakfast beer but has background hint of coffee.
  • Infidel Imperial IPA - Now here's the jewel. 8.5%. The first batch is still conditioning but a sneak peek revealed the aroma you'd expect from Columbus, Chinook, and Cascade hops at 70+ IBU. Once in the mouth an almost fruity malt hits first, followed up with lots of big hop bitter without being Cascadey grapefruit Ruination enamel scraping on and on. Not hop juice. Intricate. A two-taste beer.

So NINE G has lawnmower beer, drinkable pub ale, interesting porter, and a now a kick-in-the-afterburners offering to make a name for themselves. Sounds like Doktor and Voodoo have a good plan. Next up, a tasting room with a conference annex that's now just framed in.

City Wide Liquors in downtown South Bend has a good deal with it's $7.50 6-pack mix and match including FIn Du Monde, Balto, Great Lakes Christmas, Back Road Blueberry, Bells Winter White, Raison d'Etre, and Sapient.

Tom Schmidt hopes to be up and running with the new Mishawaka Brewing satellite brewery in Elkhart before the end of May. They'll use it to increase Four Horsemen and INDIAnaPale Ale production and to put Hop Head and Seven Mules Kick-Ass Ale into full-time production. Specialty right now: Seven Mules Kick-Ass Ale (9.0% Malt Liquor).

Coming up: Two Sisters Ale (6.5% IPA with Chinook and Cascade. Tom Webster's winner of Michiana Extract & Grain Association homebrew club competition).

Mad Anthony's Kolsch is on tap. Mellow rather than sharp. Seasonals are an Oatmeal Stout and an American Red that has a big fruity smell, mild, balanced to the unhoppy side.

The Mad Bus to the Microbrewery Festival (July 29) is $60. That includes transportation, ticket to the fest, and refreshments on the bus. Reserve your seat by July 14.

Warbird's P-47 Wheat is available in kegs at about a dozen places in the Ft. Wayne and Valparaiso areas and it's still about 3 months out before we see cans. That's a shame because Matt Hill has made one of the best German Weiss biers outside of Bavaria. Supremely drinkable. All the right hefe, clove, banana notes. (Sometimes a beer writer feels almost guilty for trying to find the best points of new local beers but this sure isn't the case with P-47 or Infidel - their ratings on Beer Advocate and Rate Beer, not to mention State Fair medals, will prove these to be as great as I say).

A couple of places with both P-47 and the T-6 Red Ale have come up with a blend called "Saudi Sunrise" peach/apricot notes come out and it's really easy quaffing. Maybe they'll soon have a third beer in their lineup with an in-house blend.

The last stop was at the Heorot in Muncie. The sister site, Center Stage, a block away is catching on and Stan is booking bigger and bigger events. There will be 8 bands starting at 2pm this Saturday and 8 more on June 10th.

But wait, there's more.

The Potable Curmudgeon has the story on the Madison Ohio River Valley Folk Festival.

Some new beers at RichO's testify to the literary imagination of brewers: Allagash Curieux, BBC Professor Gesser's Mind Numbing Ale, BBC Homewrecker Double IPA, DFH Golden Shower Imperial Pilsner, Founders Curmudgeion Old Ale, Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout.

The BrewersCup.org web site is updated with the 2006 forms and stuff.

Great Fermentations will move in late June to 5127 East 65th Street, about 3 blocks west of Binford (Hwy 37) on the south side of 65th Street. No change to phone numbers or email address.  463-2739 or 888-HME-BREW (888-463-2739) anita@greatfermentations.com. This will almost triple the space to 4,000 sq ft. and allow the monthly homebrew classes to come inside from the parking lot.

Apologies to whoever is distributing Chapeau "Authentic Traditional Belgian Lambic Beers" from De Troch but Banana Lambic? Pineapple? Lemon? Plum (Mirabelle)? Sorry. See what Jean-Pierre Van Roy has to say.

5-24 Anheuser-Busch is buying the Rolling Rock Brand name from InBev for $82 million.  They did not purchase the brewery or equipment.  So it is possible we'll see another beer coming out of Latrobe, PA

5-22 Best place to grab a beer? How about Rich-O's ranked #19 in the USA and Three Floyd's ranked 34th? Speaking of Three Floyd's, Bob is on the road today heading that way for a brewery tour of northern Indiana. We should get a nice write-up from him in a few days including a review of Shorline. Stay tuned!

5-21 Mark Schiess of Carmel is the only Hoosier to advance to the second round of judging in the AHA 2006 National Homebrew Competition. His Brown Ale had tough competition in the American Ale category against 48 other entries but garnered a 40.0 to place first.

Rock Bottom's 86th Street location unveiled Iain's Scottish on pole day. Good strong malt 80 shilling darkness in both color and palette. Bigger than either Belhaven 80/- or Robert the Bruce. Think of a Southern Brown mixed with an ESB with unmalted roasted barley. It will be online for a few weeks as he made 22bbls. (Iain Wilson pictured at left)

Jerry at the Downtown Rock Bottom brewed a big IPA last Wednesday that will be out in a couple of weeks. Sounds like he's serious when he called it a "big" IPA. 8bbls and 15 pounds of hops - Cascade for bitter. Willamette and Fuggles for aroma.

5-18 Rumor: A bird in the hand is worth two to Busch. Goose Island may sell 35% of itself to Anheuser-Busch which would start distributing GI beers. Sales of Honkers Ale rose 24% during 2005 according to reports in the Chicago Tribune.

Another rumor: Ontario's Sleeman Breweries is not doing well financially and is up for sale. They bought Unibroue a couple of years ago and it may end up being spun off.New to Indiana and the world: Houblon Chouffe Dobbelen IPA Tripel. Huh? Imperial IPA and Belgian Tripel made by Chouffe? Hmm. review

Bob Rowland of Rowland's Calumet Brewing Co., Chilton, WI and organizer of the Wisconsin Microbrewers Festival died May 17th., four days before the festival's 15th running.

Confused about the Bell's 2, 4, 6, and 8? Here's a rundown.

In addition to the World Class / Upland / Beer Geek Challenge where you get your homebrew distributed across Indiana, Sam Adams has a similar contest. No details yet except an entry window of August 1-18.

Dateline May 12, 2006. Long Island Beer Festival. $45 tickets. Organizers pre-sold more tickets than the indoor venue would hold. By some reports over 1000 more tickets. They start turning away people with tickets. Then the fire marshal shuts the place down.

Worst opening paragraph award goes to MSNBC: "When I last cracked open quarterly results from Boston Beer (NYSE: SAM), its stock was hopping in response to frothy earnings. This time around, shares lost more than 5% in recent trading. While sales remain stout, a drop in first-quarter profits left a sour taste among investors.

Coming up:

  • Fri, May 19 & Sat May 20 - Ohio River Valley Folk Festival, Madison, IN. New Albanian and Upland will be pouring.
  • Sat, May 20 - Rock Bottom 86th St, Indy 1 year anniversary. $1 specials all day. Tapping party at 6pm.
  • Mon, May 22 - Moosbacher Beer tasting - Kahns, Carmel. 5-7pm.
  • Thurs, May 25 - Lafayette Brewing - Firkin of Summer Kölsch Bier opened.
  • Keg Liquors tasting including Oaken Barrel Alabaster and Barley Island Sheet Metal Blonde - Clarksville 5pm-8pm.
  • Mon, May 29 - Jolly Pumpkin Beer tasting - Kahns, Carmel. 5-7pm.
  • Wed, May 31 - Beer Tasting at the Chatterbox  - Indianapolis. 6-8pm
Music at the brewpubs:

5-17 COLUMBUS: "Jon Myers, former co-owner and manager of It's All The Buzz, recently purchased the Columbus Bar located in downtown Columbus. Jon and his partner Doug Memering have done a near total remodeling of the old Columbus Bar ( The CB ). Only the mirrors on the walls and the old style bar remain from the previous owner. They will be opening withing the next few days and look for around fifteen beer on tap in addition to many bottles of premium beers. In addition to the aformentioned changes, Jon will also begin brewing beer on site in the near future.

Oh, by the way, It's All The Buzz has really gone down hill. It is rather sad the way the new ownership has neglegted "The Buzz". They are too worried about their chain of BW3 Wings including the new one being built in Columbus. The Buzz has only had three new beers on tap since the beginning of this year. They used to have two or three new beers on tap each month! And the bottle selection is sub par at best. Close sources say that as soon as the new BW3 Wings in Columbus opens, that The Buzz will at best be a beer and wine only bar. So keep an eye on these turn of events.

No, I have nothing to do with either establishment. I am just a very enthusiastic beer fan giving you the low-down on what's happening in Columbus. Well, I hope you guys come to Columbus and check out the new and improved Columbus Bar soon." -Chris

5-15 This Wednesday evening May 17, Phyllis Jones from the
Greenwood Fire Department. is having
a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society at the Oaken
Barrel Brewing Co. Oaken Barrel will donate 20% of the
evening sales to the American Cancer Society. Please come join
us for dinner to help support the American Cancer Society.

5-12 Attention Homebrewers!

I am proposing that we all gather together for some homebrewing.  Yes I know National Homebrew Day has come and gone, but do we need a special day to have a reason to get together and brew up some beer?

This is for any homebrewer that wants to be there!  First timer, old timer, all grain and extract! Come one come all! And anyone else who wants to be there to learn how to brew, or watch us brew, or just wants to drink some beer is invited to join us.

So if you are interested let me know, and we'll get something set up.

Mark@Indianabeer.com

5-11 From the Bloomington Hopjockeys: "This year Great Fermentations, indianabeer.com, and World Class Beverage are hosting what they call the Ultimate Beer Geek Challenge.  Basically brew up a mean IPA following their rules and submit it for judging.  You can find the regulations and entry form at the bottom left of this link.  There is a $20 entry fee but this also includes a ticket to the Indiana Guild Microbrewery Festival on July 29th

From Bob: The Potable Curmudgeon reports Eileen "Ale-Leen" Martin is moving from her 4-year stint as Brewster at Browning's Brewery in Louisville to become Cellerman at Upland starting May 15th.The Dark Lord at Three Floyds Brewing was sold out in only two hours during their release party. There are a couple of bottles at Crown Liquors, 116th & Brooks School that Mike Sprinkle brought back but they're expensive.Meanwhile, in Indianapolis:Last Monday's Spring Beer Tasting at Shallos was a full house. Lots of springtime beers and whatever else the distributors wanted to bring like Dragon Milk, Black Tulip, Oaken Barrel's Alabaster, Founder's Bastard, some Breckenridge beers, not to mention "Summer" beers from Sierra Nevada, Sam Smith, Shipyard, and Dog Day. If everyone didn't win a door prize they just weren't paying attention. Mike and Paul do this about 4 times a year and they are always good value.

Rock Bottom's Vienna Lager downtown is perfect to style. On June 16th Jerry will host their 10th anniversary celebration with the tapping of a big 10% Northwest Amber using 5 malts and 5 hops. The Rock Bottom on 86th Street will celebrate their 1 year anniversary on May the 20th with $1 beer and food specials all day and a tapping of Naughty Scot (a 6.5% Scottish Ale) at 6pm. A quick preview showed off the Scot as a complex malty start, dry finish with Fuggles and Goldings under its kilt. Oh, that reminds me - Brewmaster Iain Wilson promises to wear his kilt that day also. On tap right now are another Vienna Lager (darkish, full, malt in back end), An American Wheat, Double Barrel Pale Ale, a Milk Stout, Catcher in the Rye, and an IPA along with the usual Helles Lager Light, Heartland Red, Brickway Brown and the April/May regular - Fire Chief. The handpulls have the Pale Ale and Heartland Red. Coming up after the Scottish is a Kölsch.Ram's Vienna Lager is just as good. Thursday they will be brewing a American Pale Summer Session ale at 3.8%. followed by a Sausalito Summer Ale. If, and only if, you are a Ram Mug Club member you'll get a notice of their June 1st mug club outing featuring a California Common (steam beer) and a trip to an Indians game. The new Ram satellite on 37 north of I69 is possibly quieter than the one downtown and more industrial and the TVs seem more restrained.Alcatraz has some Schwartz Imperial on tap with oatmeal and honey. Plenty of burnt caramel goodness heads up your nose then follows onto your tongue where it sits until you relax. The 75 IBU from Summit hops is more than enough to balance so it finishes quite dry.Oaken Barrel's taps are filled with Indiana Amber, Superfly, Uberweizen and Gnaw Bone. They now have a cooler with 6-packs at the door.At Buffalo Wild Wings, downtown Indianapolis

  • On Tap: Three Floyds Gumballhead, Rogue Locker Stout, Santa's Private Reserve, Mogul, McAuslan Oatmeal Stout
  • On the handpulls: Barley Island Bourbon Barrel Stout, Bells Double Cream
  • On the hop infuser: Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

The Rathskeller's seasonal lineup includes Weihenstephan Dunkel, Smithwicks, and the house (Dark Horse Red Raspberry) Razz. Spaten Maibock is on right now but will be replaced with some Oktoberfest when the current keg empties.

MacNiven's has possibly the last cask of Gales Prize Old Ale on tap. It's wonderful but pricey. Also Kostrister Black Lager, Stone Ruination, Founders Dirty Bastard, Bells 3rd Coast (Amber and 2-Hearted are in rotation), Young's Double Chocolate, Upland Dragonfly, Smithwicks, etc. Dogfish Head 60-Minute should return soon.

We stopped in at Spencer's Stadium Tavern on the corner of McCarty and West Streets. It's a rejuvinating dive with Dustin Boyer as head bartender. Prop. Spencer Valentine has had the place open for 4 months after a big refurb and the taps are now working with Dirty Helen, Dragonfly, Stone IPA, and Clay's ESB from the Ram. Plenty of interesting bottles and sandwiches for food. It'll be a gold mine for him when the new stadium opens.

The Parti Pak on Indy's south side has become a major real deal with about 1/3 of the store devoted to our kind of beer. Way too many things to list like Gale's 2001 Masterbrew and Conquest Ale. Burton Bridge Olde Expensive, 2000 and 2001 La Coq Imperial Russian Stout, Eggenberger Urbock 23°, all the Indiana beers, etc. etc. etc. It probably has the largest selection in town.On the northeast side, there are now 4 major liquor stores strewn across like a big smile on 116th and 96th Streets. Spend an afternoon and take your checkbook.

  • Kahn's in Carmel continues to have the largest walk-in cooler in the state and we found a couple of 2003 Gales Prize Old Ales stuffed away in a box in the corner.
  • Hamilton Beverage  has slipped to a lower rung in the last couple of years with the next three contenders opening but they do have a full line of Bells.
  • The full range of JW Lees Harvest Ale are displayed including '98, '99, 2000 and the 4 barrel-aged versions.
  • At the newer Hop Shop on 96th, Courtney Hall had 12oz 6-packs split to singles and gives 5% off 6 single bottles, 10% off 12, and 15% off mixed cases. They also have a full range of Harvest ale.
  • Payless at 96th and I69 probably has the largest range up north including all the new interesting BBC, 2 brothers, Chouffe, beers along with Berliner Kindl weisse - a real rarity.
  • Crown Liquor's new location, at 116th & Brooks School, is managed by beerdom's jack-in-the-box Mike Sprinkle and he's stocking it with all the usual suspects and lots more. Happy browsing.

JW Lees Harvest Ale at the Hop Shop - also available at Kahn's

Easley Winery has some high-end items for homebrewers - A home filter kit with pump, big grain mills, a motorized 5-head bottle filler complete with vacuum pump and auto shut-off, and new oak wooden casks ranging from 2 to 30 gallon.

Scheuerer's Moosbacher line is in Indy. Kahn's Carmel has the Kellerbier, Premium Lager, Weissbier, and Schwarze Weisse. They will have a free tasting on May 22nd, 5-7pm. On the 15th their weekly tasting will be Weihenstephan's beers. There was a bill in the Nebraska legislator to legalize boilermakers but it was withdrawn. There's been a ban there on mixed drinks with both beer and any liquor since Prohibition ended. No other state has any similar proscription.Tennessee, not to be outdone in stupidity, has a bill requiring off-premises stores to card everyone who buys alcohol, not just people who look close to underage. It looks like this bill will pass. A second provision would enable stores to pay a "certification fee" of up to $250 so they wouldn't loose their license if an under-age sale happens. Sounds like pre-paying a fine or maybe a bit of extortion by the state given that under-age sale violations often happen when the police hire a kid to buy a Zima in a sting operation.

About Indie Brew - Charlie Watts says "It was formed to provide great beer for the concert, festival and special event market. We focus on the best of the local, regional and national microbrews. We also occasionally have select imports on draft, depending on event, season, availability , etc.We provide beverage service, beer and wine, for other group's events and also promote our own events, primarily concerts. Our goal is for IndieBrew to become synonymous with great beer, music and a good time in general.Currently, we are doing four monthly recurring venues: two are IndieBrew promoted, and two are other folks venues. The two Indiebrew promoted venues are The Royal Theater in Danville, usually the 2nd or 3rd Saturday of the month; and Trader's Point Creamery in Zionsville, on the 4th Saturday. We also do First Friday concerts for Big Car Gallery in Fountain Square, and Tim Grimm's Americana Series in Columbus. All of our venues are unique but share a common thread: non-smoking, all ages venues in a listening-room environment, to the delight of artists and patrons alike."To find LBC's Tippecanoe Common in Columbus or Brugge's "The Black" in Lafayette you'll have to go to an IndieBrew event.

5-4 Coming soon to a store near you: Lindemans Apple Lambic. They say "Long before hops were common in most beers, various fruits and herbs were used to season beers. The clean, bright aroma and flavor of apples melds beautifully with the complex tartness of lambic. Smooth, light body with the fresh flavor of real apples and a light green-apple tartness. Perfect with rich cream sauces, hearty soups, aromatic cheeses and spicy cuisine - supremely refreshing".

Rumor: Anheuser-Busch is going to buy Rolling Rock.

Great Fermentations will move from Broad Ripple to the 65th & Binford (SR 37) area of Indianapolis in June. It won't be so convenient to stop in while at the Broad Ripple Brew Pub but Anita will be able to almost triple the size of the store.

News of the Indiana State Fair Brewers Cup:

  • Entries this year should be delivered (by hand or mail) to Payless Liquors, 9520 Uptown Dr. Indianapolis, IN 46256. All entries must be received between June 10th and June 24th. There, Brian Snider will tenderly take your 3 bottles to the judging on July 8th.
  • Judges are always needed but there will be more local judges. 13 Hoosiers had a study group last winter and took the BJCP exam in March. Ron Smith of the Foam Blowers of Indiana homebrew club is planning another study session that will run 10 Thursday evenings from January to March, 2007.

The Broad Ripple Brew Pub has Wobbly Bob, an American Pale Ale, on the handpull right now along with their Brown. A Porter is coming up.

News from the Brewers of Indiana Guild (and its new, updated web site):

  • The B.I.G. hired Bob Ostrander this week to serve as Marketing Director for the organization. He'll keep reporting for IndianaBeer.com (how convenient) but now will have two excuses to drink beer.
  • The B.I.G. web site www.brewersofindianaguild.com has been completely refurbished. Now with complete brewery/brewpub reviews and maps (kinda like IndianaBeer's but with rose-colored tasting glasses), an event calendar (again, kinda like IndianaBeer's), etc.
  • The B.I.G. will, starting in July, offer real, useful, Associate Memberships to the drinking public. Your $30 membership will get:
    • An Indiana Beer Passport - a book of discount offers from member breweries, brewpubs, beer pubs, liquor stores, homebrew shops. Free food, discounted merchandise, etc. Bob's working on lining up those discounts now.
    • A monthly email newsletter detailing what's being offered by all 22 Indiana breweries as well as many good pubs in the state and what's new in the distributors' inventories.
  • Associate members will also get invitations to unveiling parties, dinners, brewery tours, a golf tournament or two, and maybe even some Texas Hold-em.
  • Plans for the July 29th Indiana Microbrewers Festival are proceeding well. Obviously more details later (translation: Bob's job is, in part, to push attendance to 2500 this year so he won't let anyone hear the end of it before July 30th).

5-2 Uerige's Sticke is a "secret" beer made in Düsseldorf once a year and an annual guest at RichO's. This year, though, there was a second batch, nay a German version of double secret probation. This Uerige's Doppel Sticke with 8.5% ABV and 75 IBU and it hits these shores this month. We'll bet a cask finds its way to New Albany if Roger Baylor has stopped drooling on his keyboard long enough to order it.

Miller is making hay about formula changes in Bud Light. Seems A-B claims they haven't changed their flagships at all but Miller has come up with documents from Auggie III saying "I told the growers of our desire to use more hops in our brewing for the purpose of delivering more amplitude and hop flavor in Budweiser". Previously A-B statements have only admitted "small adjustments to address seasonal changes in raw ingredients". Who'da thunk the Keystone Light mentality would have progressed so far that one mega is accusing another mega of putting in more flavor?

Butler Winery's (Bloomington) annual Spring Brewing (& Winemaking) Supply Sale runs from today through May 10. 20% off equipment, malt, hops, and yeast. 15% off kits and flavorings. 10% off books, sugars, and malt extracts. etc.

4-27 From Bob:

This weekend:

  • Friday - Indiebrew show at Trader's point Creamery, 9101 Moore Rd., Zionsville. Greg Ziesemer of the Spud Puppies accompanied by Kriss Luckett. We think 8pm. Beers available include: Spaten Maibock, Lafayette Brewing Company's Tippecanoe Common Ale, Brugge Black. Also Golden Pheasant, Pilsner Pinkus Munster Alt and Pilsner. Tickets are $14. This is Charlie (nee of Upland) Watts' creation - every other week he's doing a dance with good beer rotating between Danville and Zionsville.
  • Friday -  Lafayette Brewing: Hot Buttered Rum String Band.
  • Saturday - Fest of Ale at Keg Liquors in Clarksville. 1pm-6pm.
  • Saturday - Three Floyds Dark Lord release party. Call 219-922-4425 for information.
  • Saturday music: Lafayette Brewing: Michael Kelsey; Barley Island: Stingtown Pickers; Shoreline: Short Brothers
  • Monday: Tickets go on sale for the Michigan Beer Fest (July 21-22, Ypsilanti, near Ann Arbor).
  • Monday: Tickets also go on sale for the Great Taste of the Midwest (August 12, Madison, WI). You can mail order 4 tickets by snailmail.
  • Tuesday is Election Day. You know what that means, besides no beer until 6pm.
  • Just got this from Mike DeWeese: Dick's Bodacious BarBQ Broad Ripple Going out of business sale. From now through May 7 most everything is $2. $2 Sandwiches, $2 drafts including micros. $1 ribs.

The Rock Bottom on north 86th St, (Willow Lane) Indianapolis, has on tap right now Catcher in the Rye which has a bit of rye dryness in an amber ale. They also have two handpulls, now with cask conditioned Red and a Vanilla Stout.

Ram, downtown Indy, is ready for the Fire Chief's convention with 4 beers newly put on tap. They're brewing a summer session Copper Ale right now that will replace the Maibock. Look for the Light beer at Ram to rotate between a Vienna Lager, a Bohemian Pils, a Kölsch, and a Cream Ale. In June, look for some Doppelbock that is sitting right now in a Jack Daniels barrel. The Ram Indy Blonde can be had at the Indians baseball games by the way.

    • Prometheus (??????????) ESB. It's a 6% unfiltered amber bitter with some late drying bitterness.
    • Vienna Amber. About 4.7%. With a hoppy dry finish.
    • Dave's signature Maibock, always the best in Indiana (proven by the gold medal it earned at last year's State Fair). Tweaked this year with a bit more caramel malt and 7% ABV. There isn't enough to last more than a couple of weeks though, so catch it now.

Each year, in July, most of the brewers in the state make their version of a Replicale. This year's Dave Colt has created a recipe for a Indiana Farmhouse Saison using Summit hops, an experimental strain of Belgian yeast from White Labs, and the addition of Hickory Shagbark Syrup from Trafalger, Indiana. Should be interesting.

The Rock Bottom in downtown Indy is rapidly coming back to sanity under new Head Brewer Jerry Sutherlin. There will be a Vienna Amber for Cinco de Mayo. On tap now:

    • Fire Chief. The 10th annual release of this American Red. 5.3%.
    • This month's wheat is a spiced up American Hefe with some orange peel and coriander. It has a nice pear/apple tartness.
    • The "Predecessor" Barley Wine is still on tap from January and it's getting better all the time. It's only 8.5% but has the strong complexity it should have. There are still a couple of BBLs in the serving tank and kegs could be made available.
    • The handpull has a cask conditioned Brown Ale that is dry hopped with East Kent Goldings. The session-strength 3.8% is belied by the strong chocolate, chicory, treacle, and especially nut character. It's earthy and sweet and served properly warm. A good desert beer.

New Albanian Hoosier Daddy Crimson & Cream Ale is on tap at RichO's (Golden Promise, Cara-Red, Special B, and Chocolate malt; Northern Brewer and Nugget hops; Some Lactose; 7.0%; 50 IBU). ConeSmoker (the NobleSmoker version)  is coming back soon. Full on tap list on Publicanista.

Rumor: Some wine barrels from Oliver are being put to use aging some Lambic base beer down at Upland. Caleb isn't sure what fruit will be added later but he has a year to decide.

San Angelo, TX, has noticed Warbird's T-6 Red beer.

Brugge Brasserie's Grand Cru should be out next week. A Saison will follow.

Vine Liquors in Mishawaka now has some homebrew supplies and kits in stock with room to add more if people are interested. The selection now is not nearly as big as the back room at Mishawaka Brewing.

The Potable Curmudgeon reports Bistro New Albany seems about to commence operations. It will feature New Albanian beer both on-tap and in the food.

New Holland's Zooer wheat beer will be available next month. Or from this Friday at the brewpub.

Michael Jackson's Rare Beer Club features only cork-bottled beers. You get 3 or 6 750ml bottles each month or every other month. Lots of options and they are needed when the top end Platinum Membership with 72 bottles a year goes for $1079 plus tax.

Founders Devil Dancer Triple IPA comes in at 13% ABV and either 112 or 200 IBU depending on who you ask. Yike. 200 IBU?

Coors Light Stay Cold Glassware is proven to keep beer colder, longer. Cold Wrap Bottles Combine Rocket Science with Rocky Mountain Cold.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the national brands used 27% more malt and 100% more hops back in 1950. IBUs have gone from 15 to 20 down to under 10.

Tennessee. Bah. They've proposed a rule that would require everyone buying beer in a liquor store to produce proof of ID. They also want to extort up to $285 per store as a "certification fee" so if they're caught selling to a minor they only get a $1000 fine instead of losing their license. If you pay up front, the penalty for breaking the law is less. Doesn't sound very democratic.

Cuba. Hmmm. Bucanero Brewing will launch a "premium" beer in May. Bucanero Max will be 6.5% ABV.

Press release passed on without comment: "Pro wrestler Triple H has signed to be part of Miller Lite's new beer campaign, joining Burt Reynolds, Eddie Griffen, Jerome Bettis and Aaron Rolston (the Colorado hiker who cut off part of his arm during a mountain climbing accident). In the ads, the men will ponder such riddles as when to leave the toilet seat down."

    Some tastings:

    • Jorger Weisse - An almost typical hefeweizen without as much banana/clove/spice as you'd expect from a German Weisse but still enough flavor to match with spicy foods. Cloudy throughout without any yeasty clumps.
    • Hangzhou Xihu Siwo - The label is mainly in Chinese and evidently just ready to be imported into the U.S. Pale, pale yellow without a blue tinge. Very carbonated. Ricey (or at least grassy) but mainly watery. No hop presence. Could be mistaken for bad champagne. 3.8%.
    • Wychwood Hobgoblin. "Afraid you might taste something lager boy?" As Real Ale, it was a regular at my closest pub in England. In that version it was full of chocolate with a touch of spicy mint. Bottled, the carbonation is still moderate and the head falls quickly. It's a little lighter in color, body, and taste with a cherry background. Solid carmaelly stuff with good bitter balance.
    • Kapsreiter Landbier - An Austrian Helles that boasts 8 days fermentation and 66 days maturation. Like many Helles, it's not very complex and has a bit of sweetness not expected in a plain yellow beer. Almost delicate but not terribly interesting.
    • The last bottle in the picture is a sake that my sister-in-law gave me. No English on the label at all. I suspect it's really, really old as it wasn't drinkable at all. Don't know why I even mention it here except as a warning to run the other way if you see a bottle like this. Oh well.

4-25 Click here for info on the Barley Hop Academy on April 27. A2Z Cafe right next to Dick's Bodacious Bar-B-Q at 96th and gray, 818-9510 to make reservations. Thanks Mark.

4-24 From Barley Island: "On Monday April 24th we have BarFly IPA on tap at Barley Island Brewing Company!  This American IPA has a floral, fruity - orange/grapefruit aroma from dry-hopping with Cascade and Summit hops.  Summit is a new hop variety which helps BarFly achieve its 60 IBUs.

Why put just 1 IPA on tap when there are so many tasty IPA's available in the Midwest?  To further educate our customers on the India Pale Ale style we have 3 guest IPA's:  Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Three Floyd's Alpha King, and Upland's Dragonfly IPA.  Available by the pint or as an IPA Sampler along with BarFly IPA.  A laminated sample card has some style guidelines for American IPA and the logo of each beer to keep track of the lineup.  Hurry in for this awesome IPA Sampler while supplies last!"

4-16 The Brugge Brasserie will celebrate it's 1st anniversary on this Saturday (the 22nd) and everyone is invited to the party:

    • $2 beers
    • Food specials, especially Moules Frites (Mussels with fries), their specialty
    • Music
    • Merriment
    • Co-owner and the real star of ER, Abraham Benrub will be there for all you chicks that think he's the sexy one

    On tap right now are:

    • Pilsner (Gold at the 2005 Indiana State Fair)
    • The Black (8 malts, molasses, poplar syrup, candi sugar, chocolate, coffee, vanilla, which combine to really hide the orange peel)
    • Quadripple (11.5% ABV)
    • Saison d Être (hazy gold with sour citrus and floral notes)
It will be about 2 weeks before Ted's Grand Cru comes on line. Aging in the back room is a wooden cabernet cask with some Quadripple infused with Chinese pickled plums. It'll be interesting to see how that comes out.

    Oh, and there's free Wi-Fi.

4-12 "Our Belgian-style Wheat Ale, Sheet Metal Blonde, is now on tap at the Barley Island pub.  Spicy wheat aromatics and perfumy coriander complement this refreshing, effervescent brew.  Served with a slice of orange to enhance the fruit profile.  12 oz bottles are available at your favorite liquor store with a new fully printed carton.  A coupon for the restaurant is on the bottom of the six-pack carton.  Look for Sheet Metal Blonde in World Class Beverages Spring Taster twelve pack!

Coming soon - BARFLY IPA - an American India Pale Ale - on tap April 24th at Barley Island (head brewer Jon Lang's birthday), available in 12 oz bottles about July 1st.

4-10 "Now that the Broad Ripple Brewpub has gone non-smoking inside, the patio area might get more than its fair share of smoke. The restaurant across the street has asked the planning people for permission to put in a smoker on their side-lot. Wonder how a Traveling John's Best Bitter will taste with hickory smell added?" -Bob

4-6 Bob Ostrander (email) is back in Indiana and provides the following string of news. Thanks Bob and welcome back!!.....

"Jack Frey's seasonal beer at Turini's in Evansville is a Dunkelweisse that's quite dark. Shoot, it's stouty black but slightly translucent in the dim light at the bar. It's clovey and spicey but German yeast taste prevails. The aroma struck me as almost a cola as did the belch. Jack has distinctively stamped his mark here. Coming up is a Helles Bock and a Wheat. Check out the new Thunderbolt Red neon sign in the window.

Little Cheers has a Blonde, a Chocolate Porter that is comparatively a fairly slow mover, and an Amber that is pleasantly bitter with the requisite caramel sweetness for balance. The $2/pint price is great.

Up north at the Mishawaka Brewpub, Rick Schmidt and crew are extra busy putting the final touches on their new brewing/bottling facility in Elkhart. The Federal inspection should be done by the time you read this. In addition to keeping up with bottled Four Horseman, INDIAna Pale Ale, etc, the new facility will allow them to keep 7 Mules Strong Ale available year-round. Right now Ella Rose Porter is on tap. It's a medium, clean, porter with plenty of bitterness.

The Vine liquor store in north Mishawaka now stocks some homebrew kits.

Mad Anthony has opened their third Munchie Emporium - this one in Warsaw, Indiana. You can't miss it just a block east of the main square. In the 4 weeks it's been open it's become the "in" place for the business and medical people in town. They sold all 100 entries to their mug club in just 2 days and the traffic hasn't stopped yet.

Mad Anthony's seasonal Maibock is bold and malty. The Bourbon Barrel Cherry is rich - an A+.

At Alcatraz, Omar's latest is a very complicated Schwartz lager that will please anyone looking for a porter/stout. He took the Abbey Ale offline during the NCAA but it will return.

The Ram in downtown Indy has a Dopplebock (crisp & delicate - ie it doesn't whap you up side the head) and an 80/shilling Scottish (lighter color and lighter taste than to the style) along with Clay's IBA (Hallertauer crispness throughout).

Word is the Brewer's of Indiana Guild's annual beer fest in Broad Ripple (July 29th - mark your calendars) will feature a Belgian Farmhouse style as the Replicale. Almost all the state's brewers will make the same basic recipe with their own finishing touches.

St. Louis Lamibc tastings: (that's St. Louis brewery of Belgium, not Missouri)

Kriek: Powerful tart cherry without sourness. Rated very highly by the panel.
Frambroise: Again, powerful. This time a tart raspberry. Also a favorite.
Peche: The peach is more subdued and the sweetness gets a sour balance.
Cassis: Thick. Thick mouthfeel. Almost syrupy. But that may be what a cassis should be. Voted least favorite of the four."

4-3 Doug Memering and Jon Myers (former It’s All the Buzz owner) of Columbus have purchased the Columbus bar and plan to open a brewpub in its place.  No details on the size of the brewery yet. Click here for the story!

Stop in today to get your official basketball glass filled with your favorite ale for only $5.00. Come in and watch the final games this weekend on one of our many TV?s. Also, the brew house will be open Monday night for the final game.

There are just a few of each variety so be sure to come in soon to get yours before they are gone; it will be on a first come first serve basis. I have tried to choose the more popular varieties. 2-27 Laura writes in: "3floyds is having their DarkLord 2006 release party April 29th. Also, on March 6th, 3Floyds is having a Brewmaster dinner (mexican theme) but that might be sold out already."

2-24 Bob's been drinking more beer. Lots of it.

2-22 From Mark: "Mike Deweese of BW3's downtown just emailed me that the 3F's Black Sun is now on tap. Troy from MacNivens passed on that he is getting one of the last kegs of Gales Prize Old Ale that you will see in these parts.  No ETA yet, but I will pass it on as soon as I know. MacNivens does currently have Two Brothers Hop Juice at 10% abv and 100 IBU's, and Bells Double Cream Stout on tap.  Both are  very good.

2-20 From Bloomington Brewing Company: "Rosenbaum's newest creation has simply been coined BBC IPA, short for India Pale Ale.  Created with hops from England, the U.S. and Germany, BBC's new IPA boasts a nice clean aroma of floral and citrus hops. Clear copper in color, the IPA is nicely balanced by sweet malt and caramel notes.  The malt continues through the finish, complimented by somed lingering grassy bitterness. This specialty ale possesses medium body and has a creamy mouthfeel."

2-18 The NABC multi, multi-day Gravity Head 2006 "fest" begins on Friday, Feb 24 with 17 beers on tap and 53 kegs to finish. Cash bar with 10 oz samples.

2-17 From Butler Winery: The committee meeting for HB 1190 will be next week and we need to personally contact  the senators who are on the Commerce & Transportation committee.  Phone is the best way, but email will suffice if you don't have time to call. If you have a senator on the committee, please contact them! Even if you don't have one on the committee, they need your input.

Again, we need to get moving on this.   It is critical that we contact all of our Senators today or Saturday.    If your Senator is on the commerce committe you absolutely must  make the contact.   If your Senator is not on the committee then think of someone you know who does know a member of the committee.   Make the effort.   We are coming down the home stretch here.     Please do whatever you can.

2-9 Dogfish Head is coming! With an expanded brewery which will ultimately occupy a 100,000 square foot facility, Dogfish Head will be now be available (much more available we should say) in Indiana. 60 and 90 minute IPA will widely be available, as well as a new Imperial Pilsner at 10% that reportedly carries a name that would make mom blush (or go right over her head). Look for it in March. But don't look for 120 minute IPA to be in wide release. It will continue to trickle in case by case. No kegs of it even for special customers. But, rumor has it that the Heorot has 7 cases stashed away. For emergencies?

2-8 From Butler Winery: "We have very bad news.  Last Thursday the Indiana House of Representatives voted 60 to 36 in favor of HB 1190. As written, this bill has the potential to shut down Indiana's 31 wineries. We need to kill the bill or amend it if possible. If you haven't yet done so, you need to contact your senator to tell him/her that you support Indiana wine & direct shipping. 2-3 From Oaken Barrel: "Ravenswood Red is now on tap. This ale is a deep garnet red with a dense tan head. Rich malt character punctuated with toasted malt, raisin, molasses and tobacco notes follow a spicy hop, sweet malt nose. The beer finishes with an expected balance of malty sweetness and hop bitterness. Stop in this weekend and try one. Don?t forget our Super Bowl party on Sunday with an unlimited buffet starting at 5:00.

1-9 From Dick's Barbeque in Broad Ripple: "Probably a little late notice but I'm going to start hosting beer tastings here at the Broad Ripple store.  The first January dates will be on the 7th and 14th at 6:00 p.m. and will consist of 8 beers and a meal for $15.  The theme for January will be porters and stouts, and I'm hoping to start having them on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of the month at 6:00.  If you could make them your beer knowledge would be greatly appreciated, as long as you don't show me up to much in front of the tasters. P.S. We still have about a 1/4 keg of the Alpa Klaus, and I'm about to put Sprecher Doppelbock on tap.
