Well, if you can find great beer in Columbus Indiana, you can find great beer pretty much anywhere. At least that 's what I'd like to think. Unfortunately, not every Indiana town has team Jon Myers. This father and son team opened Buzz in July of 2003. Jon (junior) is in charge of the beer and he does an extremely good job with it. Definitely a better beer selection than anyplace in Bloomington and it certainly rivals some of Indy's best beer bars.
"There was just no place to get good beer in Columbus" said Jon, "so I started one." I wish more people had that attitude. The world would be a better place for it I'm sure. Jon told me that he's turned a lot of people on to good beer. He says the beer culture is actually pretty good in Columbus. The Big Red store just down the road sends a lot of people his way and vice versa. There's also a burgeoning homebrew scene in Columbus.
In addition to two or three macro lagers, there were 11 top tier brews on draft. The Dogfish Head Aprihop keg kicked the day before I arrived. No worries. It was replaced with a keg of Three Floyd's Gumballhead. Nice. Other standouts were 3Floyd's Alpha King, Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin' IPA, Founders all Centennial IPA, Goose Island Hex Nut Brown Ale, Upland's Chocolate Stout and yes, they had Lindeman's Framboise on draft. I know this might be heresy in some beer circles, but I bet a half and half of Framboise and Upland's Chocolate Stout would be really freakin' good.

Their bottle selection was pretty damn good too. Here are some standouts among the 50 or so bottles: Aventinus Weizenbock, Ayinger Celebrator Dopplebock, Young's Oatmeal Stout, Sam Smith Taddy Porter and Oatmeal Stout, McEwan's Scotch Ale, Arcadia Imperial Stout, Founder's Dirty Bastard Scotch Ale, Dogfish Head 60 and 90 minute IPAs, Stone's IPA, Arrogant Bastard and Smoked Porter, Orval, two Chimays, and Gulden Draak. Not too shabby!
I didn't get a chance to try their food, but the menu offered a wide array of pub grub at very reasonable prices. For example, they have a 10oz hamburger (that's more than half a pound people) for $6. On the weekends they also have dinner specials like prime rib.
The Buzz has weekly beer specials like $3 Bell's pints on Mondays, $3 pints of anything except Framboise on Wednesdays and on Fridays you can get 20oz pours of Guinness for $3.75. On Sundays it's open mic and $3 pints of Upland.
They're having their 2nd anniversary party on July 8th and 9th. They're bringing in the Gordon Bonham Blues Band on the 8th starting at 9pm and Rich Hardesty on the 9th starting at 7pm.
I plan on heading back real soon.
It's all the Buzz is a bit hard to find. If you're coming from 65, get off at Columbus and head West on 46 towards Bloomington. But don't go too far, just about a mile. At the third or fourth light there is a CVS on the left. The entrance to Buzz is directly across from CVS on the right side of the road just past the light. So don't make a right at the light, rather, make a right just after the light up a small incline. Buzz is located around the right side of the complex towards the back next to the Columbus Community Church. It's hard to see from the road, so keep an eye out for the CVS. -Matt Dunn
