Belgian Style Beer Dinner

January 17, 2007

Rock Bottom Brewer Liz Laughlin and her culinary team hosted the 2007 winter brewer's dinner at Indy's north side location. The theme was Belgian style, and if craft beer education was the goal, it was achieved. The crowd was appreciative of Liz's discussion of beer styles and food pairings.

First up was a delicate salad of mixed greens, endive, and apricots and other dried fruit- topped with a slightly salty cheese and served with a Belgian Tripel weighing in at 8%.

Mussels steamed in wit and some butter and herbs were next, served in a tin bucket along accompanied by fries and lemons. The wit was noticeably lighter and drier than the Tripel and delivered a refreshing wheaty taste.

Liz saved a keg of Blitzen Ale for this occasion. The deeply red malty ale was served with the main course- a pork loin and a cantaloupe/apple medley, along with a plantain.

Dessert was chocolate mousse, delicately wrapped in a crepe with raspberry glaze and served with a tart, dry Belgian style fruit ale. Our end of the table appreciated the contrast.
