On Saturday September 24th Back Road Brewery of LaPorte In. hosted its 9th annual Open House. With two guest breweries attending the beers were flowing. Along with their staple brews Back Roads released their fall beer a Robust Porter. Weighing in at 8.5% abv this beer was truly a Robust Porter, they were also offering an excellent Scottish style ale. Three Floyds of Munster In. had brought kegs of Robert the Bruce (nothing like The Bruce on tap!) and Euro Trash a Blond Bock, a very interesting and malty brew. The second guest brewery was Shoreline Brewery of Michigan City, they had brought with them three beers which included Beltane a good Scottish style ale, Foggy Loggy Lager a traditional style Lager, and last but not lease the Bennys American Pale Ale with massive hop aroma an excellent brew.
The weather was very conducive for an outdoor event, it was a beautiful early fall day in the northern part of the state, an occasional showing of the sun kept it moderate with a nice breeze. Ten dollars got you in and one could sample as many beers as necessary to assess quality, the entertainment for the day was Ein Prosit an Oktoberfest style folk band with about 25 members. The band was a perfect accompaniment to the festival. In full traditional German fest attire every member seemed to garner an original German stein to consume from. Along with the tubas and alphorns was some great Mexican fare provided by Colima.
The Back Road Brewery was open to the public, everyone was welcome to check out the brewery and all of its facilities. From the mash tun to fermentation tanks to the brite tanks and cold storage, everything was made available to attendees, even grain samples. They have proom were you can purchase six packs, growlers, party pigs, along with T-shirts, labels and such. They had a great turn out to a great event once again encouraging people to take a back road home.
